The Joint is working to rescue Jews under threat. In the early 1990s, the Joint helped to sustain and rescue some 15,000 Ethiopian Jews. The Joint provides relief to distressed Jewish communities by providing food, clothing and medicines to the elderly. Another important activity of the Joint is the renewal of Jewish life and communities, especially in the former Soviet Union. The Joint defines itself as a Zionist organization and assists the social services in the State of Israel and the disadvantaged populations - children in distress, new immigrants, old and disabled. Also, in the event of a natural or man-made disaster, the Joint also assists non-Jews in the spirit of the "world repair" tradition.
