A gold token from the Indian Chiefs of Venezuela series, issued in honour of Mara, an Indigenous leader associated with the Maracaibo and Perijá regions of western Venezuela. The series commemorated native leaders connected with resistance to Spanish conquest during the 16th century. As no denomination appears on the piece, it is classified as a token rather than an official circulating coin. This type is attributed to 1962. Obverse: A portrait of Chief Mara facing slightly left and wearing a feathered headdress. The surrounding inscription reads CACIQUES DE VENEZUELA, with MARACAIBO and PERIJA beside the portrait and MARA below. Reverse: A group of crossed arrows appears at the centre. The surrounding inscriptions read CACIQUES DE VENEZUELA, SIGLO XVI (16th century), LEY 900 (.900 fineness) and ACUÑADA EN CARACAS (struck in Caracas).
