Uruguay - Medal commemorating the 250th anniversary of the founding process - Silver 925, 25g (NET 23.12g, 0.74 OZ), 40mm "Bruno Mauricio de Zavala" Born in 1682, he was originally from Durango (province of Biscay). Before arriving in the Río de la Plata region, he had participated in several military actions in Spain. He lost an arm at the Siege of Lleida. With the rank of Field Marshal, he was appointed Governor of Buenos Aires in 1717. Seven years later, he succeeded in forcing the Portuguese to abandon the port of Montevideo, where he first built the Fort of San José, which was demolished in 1879. Two years after the establishment of this first defense, and following orders from his monarch, Philip V, he implemented the plan to fortify the forts of Montevideo and Maldonado, subsequently ordering the founding of our future capital and commissioning Captain Pedro Millán to define the boundaries and jurisdiction of the nascent city. The following year, the Apostles Philip and James were chosen as patron saints, making it the most important of their festivities. After suppressing an uprising in Paraguay, Zabala, a staunch defender of the indigenous people and relentless in the face of foreign encroachment, died in Santa Rosa, near Santa Fe, on January 31, 1736. The Municipal Government ordered the minting of 5,000 sets of 8 medals each, commemorating the 250th Anniversary of the Founding of Montevideo.
