United States - 1 Dollar 1923 - Silver Certificate, Blue Seal - Speelman-White Signatures - Friedberg 237 A One Dollar Silver Certificate from the United States Series of 1923, among the final issues produced in the large-size format before American currency was reduced to its modern dimensions in 1929. The certificate represented one silver dollar deposited in the United States Treasury and was payable to the bearer on demand. It bears blue serial numbers and a blue Treasury seal, together with the Speelman-White signature combination. Obverse: A portrait of George Washington appears at the center within an ornate frame. "THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" appears above, followed by a statement certifying that one silver dollar had been deposited in the United States Treasury. "ONE SILVER DOLLAR" appears below, with "1 DOLLAR" at the right. The Treasury seal and serial numbers are printed in blue, and the signatures of Speelman and White appear along the lower section. Reverse: An elaborate green security design with an ornamental border and the numeral 1 appearing in the corners and along the sides. The center bears the inscriptions "THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE DOLLAR, " surrounded by geometric and foliate ornamentation. The note shows considerable circulation, including a central fold, creases, wear, staining, toning and minor edge damage. It also has four punch holes, positioned near its four corners. A classic American large-size note from the final period of this format.
