Poland - 1000 Marks 1916 - World War I, German occupation of Poland The marka was the unit of currency of the Kingdom of Poland and the Republic of Poland between 1917 and 1924. 100 fenigów was equivalent to 1 marka. During World War I in 1915, the Central Powers defeated Russia and occupied Poland. It was administered jointly by two Governor Generals -- German Hans Hartwig von Beseler in Warsaw and Austro-Hungarian Karl Kuk in Lublin. During that period four currencies circulated in Poland – the Russian ruble, the German Papiermark, the German Ostruble and the Austro-Hungarian krone. On December 9, 1916 the Polish Loan Bank (Polska Krajowa Kasa Pożyczkowa) was established and the Polish marka was introduced, equivalent in value to the German mark.
