Paypar money token - Palestine / Land of Israel - 4 Donation Receipts for the Etzel Etzel (National Military Organization), 1, 2, 5 Pounds 1940' - G-VF The National Military Organization in Israel (initials: Etzel) was a Hebrew underground military organization, founded in Jerusalem in 1931. The organization was established by commanders who resigned from the "Hagana" organization due to their demand for more decisive action in the face of the Arab aggression of those days, especially that of the events of 1949. Most of its members were young people from the Revisionist youth movement Betar. For reasons of secrecy, they did not call the organization by its name, but rather "Hagana" or "Hamamed". The members of the organization joined the IDF during the War of Independence. The Irgun was considered a terrorist organization by the British Mandate government. This determination was shared by some of the organization’s opponents, as well as other parties such as the Anglo-American Commission of Inquiry into the Affairs of the Land of Israel, the Jewish Agency, and international newspapers in the period before the establishment of the state. At the outbreak of the war, the organization numbered about 3,000 people, about a third of whom were fighters, compared to tens of thousands of members of the Haganah and hundreds of members of the Lehi. With the rise of the Irgun from the underground and the transition to almost open activity (for example, the establishment of camps in Ramat Gan and Petah Tikva), it expanded its ranks and added new volunteers, in parallel with the general mobilization of the Yishuv institutions for the Haganah, but it had difficulty training the new members, some of whom joined in order to avoid being drafted into the "Haganah". The organization also launched a fundraising campaign called the "Iron Fund", in parallel with the fundraising of the official institutions within the framework of the "Yishuv Ransom".
