Palestine - Lot of 8 tokens, "Kofer Hayishuv", charity token, Katmon occupation token Kofer Hayishuv: "Kofer Hayishuv" was an emergency taxation fund, established in 1938 for the purpose of financing security and other needs of the Jewish community ("Yishuv") in British Mandatory Palestine. The Kofer Hayishuv tax was levied on a multitude of services, for which a variety of receipts were issued, mostly in the form of paper chits or stamps. Only one metal token was issued, in 1939, which quickly became a de facto means of payment of general services, such as public transportation provided by Jewish-owned bus cooperatives. With the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, the use of Kofer Hayishuv tokens was abandoned. Obverse: Kofer Hayishuv, 5699 (1939), Receipt, ½ Mil. Reverse: Mirror image of obv. (uniface). Metal: Copper, Diameter: 17mm, Weight: 1gr. Charity token: This token was used during the time of the Turkish regime in Palestine, There was a critical shortage of small change which created a problem for the merchants and beggars. The Yeshiva struck tokens which were redeemable by them, and sold to the merchants and beggars at the rate of 20 tokens for ten Turkish paras. The tokens were very crude cut from sheets of yellowand white bronze, and minted by hammer-strking the planchets on a handmade wooden die. The dies were cut by hand, which created many varieties. The token resembled the medieval bracteate. These tokens were also used by the "Chevra Kadisha", (wealthy members of a Congregaton) to give to the beggars at a jewish funeral for participation as a "professional mourner". They sre called in most instances the "Chevra Kadisha" token, although they were used by merchants and beggars alike. metal: copper or brass. size: 27 mm. The Katamon badge: The Katamon badge was awarded as a badge to the soldiers who participated in the Battle of San Simon during the War of Independence In July 1949, the distribution of the signal began.
