Palestine - Cafe Werner Token, Haifa - 5 Mil 1930's - Bronze - NGC MS 61 - Very Rare in Such High Grade
Palestine - Cafe Werner Token, Haifa - 5 Mil 1930's - Bronze - NGC MS 61 - Very Rare in Such High Grade A rare bronze token used at "Cafe Werner" in Haifa during the British Mandate period. The tokens were issued for Zvi Werner, who immigrated from Vienna, Austria, and founded "Cafe Werner" on Herzl Street in Haifa in 1935. These tokens were used as substitutes for small change, which was often scarce in circulation at the time, and also served for internal accounting and waiter calculations within the business. The tokens were initially manufactured as blank planchets, and only after arriving in Palestine were the denominations and local inscriptions stamped onto them. Obverse: inscription "CAFE WERNER HAIFA". Reverse: denomination "5" within a decorative border. Business tokens from the British Mandate period, especially those originating from Haifa, are considered particularly rare today, with most surviving examples known only in significantly lower grades. This Mint State 61 example graded by NGC represents an exceptional and high-quality piece for collectors of Palestine tokens and British Mandate numismatics.
