Palestine - 1 Mil 1927 - "Holyland Token" - Type 1 - Bronze, NGC MS 61 BN - Rare
Palestine - 1 Mil 1927 - "Holyland Token" - Type 1 - Bronze, NGC MS 61 BN - Rare A rare "Holyland Token" based on the official 1 Mil coin design issued by the British Mandate Government in Palestine in 1927. Obverse: Within the inner circle appears an olive branch with seven leaves and six fruits. The denomination "1" appears in English and Arabic on each side of the branch. Around the center appears the inscription "ONE MIL · מיל · ﻣﻞ". Surrounding the inner design is the inscription "HISTORICAL HOLYLAND COIN" with the date "(1927)". Reverse: Design based on the official Palestine 1 Mil coin. In the center appears the inscription "PALESTINE" in English, Arabic, and Hebrew - "פלשתינה (א"י)". Below appears the date 1927 in English and Arabic numerals. Around the inner circle is an Arabic inscription referring to the "Historical Holyland Coin". Coins and tokens from the British Mandate period bearing the inscription "Palestine (E.Y.)" became politically and religiously controversial at the time. The Hebrew letters "(א"י)", standing for "Eretz Israel", were added following demands by the Jewish community, while Arab groups objected to the use of the term. The item is graded by NGC as MS 61 BN.
