One side features the traditional Sephardic emblem of a pelican feeding its young, symbolizing devotion, compassion and self-sacrifice. Around the emblem appears the English inscription: "PORTUG ISRAEL SYNAGOGE" At the bottom appears the Hebrew year notation: 5435 - 5685 These represent Hebrew calendar years, corresponding approximately to 1674 and 1924 in the Gregorian calendar.
