Judaica / Zionism - Netherlands, San Remo Conference Medal - 1920 A rare Zionist medal struck in the Netherlands in 1920 to commemorate the San Remo Conference, a milestone in international recognition of the Jewish right to the Land of Israel. Issued by the Zionist Organization of the Netherlands, the medal celebrates the conference’s decision to grant Britain the Mandate for Palestine and to reaffirm the Balfour Declaration, thus providing formal international backing for a Jewish national home. The obverse depicts a symbolic meeting between an ancient Jew and a modern Jew - one robed, the other dressed as a laborer holding a hammer, standing in a field of grain. Below them are the dates 3830-5680 (the destruction of the Second Temple and the year 1920). The reverse features a Star of David with the word “Zion” at its center, surrounded by the emblems of the Twelve Tribes and the Hebrew inscription: “If I forget thee, O Jerusalem, 10th of Iyar, 5680 (1920).” Two varieties are known: one in bronze, the other in gilt bronze (with suspension loop). This medal symbolizes the revival of the Zionist dream - from spiritual yearning to international political realization.
