Judaica / Zionism - Netherlands, Award Medal of the Chief Commission for Jewish Affairs, 1827
Judaica / Zionism - Netherlands, Award Medal of the Chief Commission for Jewish Affairs, 1827 A rare bronze medal issued in 1827 in the Netherlands by the Hoofdcommissie tot de Zaken der Israeliten, the Chief Commission for Jewish Affairs. This medal served as an official award presented to outstanding students of the Dutch Jewish Seminary, the central institution for training rabbis, cantors and teachers in the Jewish communities of the Netherlands during the 19th century. The medal was struck after a design by I. F. Schouberg. The obverse displays a rich allegorical composition: at the center stands a large incense altar, with smoke rising upwards. On its front appears a Star of David within a laurel wreath. To the left is an anchor, symbolizing hope and steadfastness. To the right stand the Tablets of the Law, marked with Roman numerals representing the Ten Commandments. In front of the altar lies a Torah scroll, encircled by a wreath, emphasizing the centrality of Torah study to the Seminary’s mission. Above all shines a radiant sun, sending beams downward as a symbol of divine guidance and enlightenment. Around the rim appears the Dutch inscription: "OVEREENKOMSTIG Z M BESLUIT VAN 17 OCTOBER 1827 No 184" Translation: In accordance with His Majesty’s decree of 17 October 1827, No. 184. The reverse bears the inscription: "TOEGEWEZEN DOOR DE HOOFD COMMISSIE TOT DE ZAKEN DER ISRAELIETEN" Translation: Awarded by the Chief Commission for Jewish Affairs. The decoration is encircled by oak and laurel branches tied with a ribbon. The blank central field was intended for engraving the name of the honored student. This medal stands as an important historical artifact documenting both the state-organized structure of Dutch Jewish life and the emphasis on academic excellence within the Jewish Seminary.
