Judaica / Zionism - Bronze Medal Commemorating the Second Zionist Congress, Paris 1898
Judaica / Zionism - Bronze Medal Commemorating the Second Zionist Congress, Paris 1898 An impressive bronze medal issued in Paris in 1898 to commemorate the Second Zionist Congress. Held one year after the historic First Congress in Basel, this gathering marked the growing institutional strength of the Zionist movement. One side bears a Hebrew inscription from the Book of Ezekiel, chapter 37: "Behold, I will take the Children of Israel from among the nations and bring them into their own land" a biblical verse expressing the ideal of the ingathering of the exiles and the return of the Jewish people to their homeland, a central theme of early Zionist ideology. The reverse features a detailed allegorical scene: a standing female figure raises her hand toward the rising sun while holding the arm of a seated man. A boy, a girl and a seated woman surround them. This symbolic composition reflects the national awakening of the Jewish people, the transition from darkness to light, and the hope for a renewed future in the Land of Israel. The medal is signed: "Beer Paris 1898" This medal is regarded as one of the iconic artistic expressions of the early Zionist congresses, blending classical European style with emerging national aspirations.
