Israel - Two set of coins, "Port of Caesarea", "Medicine in Israel" 1995 - Silver 925, 14.4g, 28.8g, 30mm, 38.7mm The Port of Caesarea - Two Millennia, 1995 5755 Special Coin Two thousand years ago, Herod built the most magnificent, advanced port in the ancient world and called it "Caesarea" after the Emperor Augustus Caesar. In honor of the Port, a bronze Prutah Coin was struck, depicting on one side a typical boat of the period and on the other, an anchor and Greek inscription "Of King Herod". Dating from 10 BCE, this coin served as the inspiration for the Commemorative Coin issued by the Bank of Israel to mark the 2000th Anniversaryof the Port of Caesarea. Towards the end of the Second Temple Period, Caesarea was considered the most beautiful of cities in the Land of Israel. Many Jews had settled in the city and were among the first to be massacred during the revolt against the Romans. The 2nd Century B.C.E. was witness to the renewal of the Jewish community in Caesarea until the destruction of the city in 639. The Crusaders conquered the city in 1102, fortifying it with surrounding walls and a secure fortress, but were defeated by the Mamluks in 1265. This marked the beginning of the end of Caesarea, left to be buried under mounds of sand. From the dawn of history, the Jewish people have had a great influence on the development of medical science. Medicine in the modern Israel continues this outstanding tradition. Many personalities in the Zionist Movement were themselves doctors who laid the foundation for modern medical practice in Israel. Israel's medical community has successfully met the challenge of problems presented by a heterogenous population. Israel has achieved high standards in medical treatment, development and application of advanced medical technology, and research. Up-to-date methods attract patients from many countries for treatment. In recent years, improvements have been made in preventive medicine, geriatric medicine and health care in the Arab sector. Obverse: Face value in Hebrew and English, "1 New Sheqel" on the silver B.U. coin; "2 New Sheqalim" on the silver proof coin; "5 New Sheqalim" on the 22 mm. gold coin and 10 New Sheqalim on the 30 mm. gold coin. The State emblem appears with the year of issue, 1995 5755, and "ISRAEL' in Hebrew, Arabic and English. Reverse: A menorah with a snake, the international symbol of medicine, wrapped around it. To the right, a test tube and cross section of the chambers of the heart. To the left, a syringe and diagram of a DNA molecule. In the upper portion, along the circumference, "MEDICINE IN ISRAEL' appears in Hebrew and English.
