Israel - “Shaare Zedek Hospital” Medal - 1973 - Silver 935, 47g (approx. 43.95g pure silver, 1.41 oz), 45 mm An official medal issued to commemorate one hundred years of Shaare Zedek Hospital in Jerusalem, one of the oldest and most important medical institutions in the Land of Israel. Shaare Zedek began as a small clinic in Jerusalem’s Old City established with the support of European Jewry. In 1902, under the leadership of Dr. Moshe Wallach, the hospital opened outside the walls of Jerusalem. Over the decades, it played a vital role in protecting public health during epidemics, periods of unrest, and wars. During the War of Independence, the hospital continued operating under enemy fire throughout the siege of Jerusalem. During the Six-Day War and the Yom Kippur War, it treated hundreds of wounded patients and performed hundreds of operations. In 1978, the hospital inaugurated its new medical center. The obverse depicts a stylized representation of the medical center building set against the Jerusalem landscape. Around the rim appears the inscription “בשרות ירושלים” (“In the Service of Jerusalem”) together with the English inscription “Shaare Zedek Medical Center Jerusalem”. The reverse features the emblem of Shaare Zedek Hospital Jerusalem. At the center appears the inscription “One Hundred Years of Shaare Zedek” in Hebrew and English, together with the dates 1873-1973.
