Israel - Pair of “Babylonian Jewry Heritage Center” Medals - Silver 935, approx. 230g (approx. 215.1g pure silver, 6.92 oz), 59 mm Please note that both medals have consecutive serial numbers. It is rare to find a pair like this, as searching for them requires a very large quantity of medals and time to examine them. Issued by the Israel Government Coins and Medals Corporation, these medals commemorate the Babylonian Jewry Heritage Center, established in 1973 to preserve the history, culture and folklore of the Jewish community of Iraq and ensure its place within the heritage of the Jewish people. Adjacent to the center operates the Babylonian Jewry Museum, opened to the public in 1988, presenting over 2,600 years of Babylonian Jewish history. The initiative for the center was led by Mordechai Ben-Porat, and later expanded to include an academic council and a research institute with extensive libraries, archives and historical collections. Obverse: Palm trees standing beside a river. Around appears the biblical verse from Psalms: “By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we wept, when we remembered Zion.” Reverse: The inscription “Babylonian Jewry Heritage Center” alongside a depiction of the center building.
