Israel - King David - Third in the “Four Who Had Renowned Coins” Series - Silver 925, 59g (approx. 54.58g pure silver, 1.75 oz), 50 mm Official medal, 2006. According to Midrash Rabbah on the Book of Genesis, four great figures of the Jewish people “had coins issued in their honor, ” symbolizing that their fame spread throughout the world: Abraham, Joshua, David, and Mordechai. The Israel Government Coins and Medals Corporation created a medal series based on these Midrashic descriptions, and this issue is dedicated to King David. The obverse depicts the young David as a shepherd boy, together with the inscription “מטבע של דוד” (“David Coin”). He is shown holding the shepherd’s staff among sheep, symbolizing the beginning of his journey - the youthful shepherd described in the Bible as “ruddy and fair-eyed.” The reverse features a tower symbolizing the royal fortress of Jerusalem, alongside the inscription “כמגדל דוד צוארך...” (“Like the Tower of David”), quoting the biblical verse from Song of Songs. The tower represents the Kingdom of David and Jerusalem, the city David established as the capital of Israel. Mintage: Only 360 pieces issued.
