Israel - Group of 25 "Decade of Eilat Port" Coins - Independence Day Issue, 1967, Proof - Silver 900, total 625g (562.5g pure silver, 18.08 oz), 34 mm Nearly three thousand years ago, King Solomon’s ships sailed from Eilat. Throughout history, Eilat changed hands many times due to its strategic importance as a gateway to Africa and the Far East. However, for long periods the area remained largely deserted. Israeli sovereignty over Eilat was established only at the end of the War of Independence. Following the Sinai Campaign in 1956 and the lifting of the naval blockade, Eilat rapidly developed into a modern city and an important port connecting Israel with Africa and the East. Obverse: A stylized numeral 5 appears across the field together with the denomination "Israeli Lirot". Along the rim appears the word "Israel" in Hebrew and Arabic, together with the date "1967". Reverse: A stylized lighthouse illuminates the name "Eilat" in Hebrew against a decorative background of sea waves. At the top appears the inscription "Decade of Eilat Port".
