Israel - 5 Palestine Pounds 1948 - Anglo-Palestine - Pick 16a A 5 Palestine Pounds banknote issued by The Anglo-Palestine Bank Limited, from the first banknote issue used by the State of Israel following its establishment in 1948. The notes were prepared in anticipation of independence, at a time when the official name of the new state had not yet been determined, and consequently the name "Israel" does not appear on them. This series constituted the new state's first paper currency following the Declaration of Independence. Obverse: The bank's name appears in Hebrew: "בנק אנגלו-פלשתינה בע"מ" (The Anglo-Palestine Bank Limited) with the denomination "חמש לירות א"י" (Five Palestine Pounds) at center. Serial number: "659902" appears twice. At bottom: "THE ANGLO-PALESTINE BANK LIMITED" "FIVE PALESTINE POUNDS" together with Tel-Aviv and the signatures of S. Hoofien and A. Barth. Reverse: The bank name and denomination appear in Arabic and English within an ornamental design: "THE ANGLO-PALESTINE BANK LIMITED" "FIVE PALESTINE POUNDS" together with the signatories' names and "TEL-AVIV". The note shows evident signs of circulation and handling, including folds, staining and edge wear, as visible in the images.
