Israel - 25 Mils 1949 - KM# 8 - “Open Link” Variety - Aluminum - All coins with minting errors are rotated to varying degrees. 25 Mils coin from the early years of the State of Israel. This variety is known among collectors as the “Open Knot” type, referring to a distinctive detail in the olive branch design surrounding the denomination. Following the establishment of Israel in 1948 and until 1952, the mil - together with the Palestine Pound - served as legal tender in the young state. The 25 Mils coin was the only coin denomination struck in Israel during that transitional period. Obverse: Denomination “25 Mils” in Hebrew and Arabic surrounded by two stylized olive branches. Reverse: Grape cluster at center with the inscription “Israel” in Hebrew and Arabic. Approximately 650,000 pieces were minted in Jerusalem and Holon. The coin ceased to be legal tender on September 6, 1950. In 1952, following the transition from the Palestine Pound to the Israeli Lira, the denomination “Mil” was replaced by the “Pruta”.
