Israel - 1 New Sheqel 2024 - Covenant of David and Jonathan - Gold 999, 1.244g (0.04 oz pure gold), 13.92mm Only 10% Commission + VAT on this item. Mintage: 5,000 “Covenant of David and Jonathan” coin, dated 2024, the 28th issue in the “Biblical Art” series and legal tender issued by the Bank of Israel. The coin commemorates one of the most moving and celebrated stories of friendship and loyalty in the Bible - the covenant between David and Jonathan. Jonathan, the son of King Saul and heir to the throne, formed a deep and enduring bond with the young David, who would later become King of Israel. Despite Saul’s growing jealousy and fear of David’s rise to power, Jonathan chose to remain loyal to his friend and protect him, even at the risk of opposing his own father. The Bible describes the depth of their relationship with the words: “Jonathan and David made a covenant because he loved him as his own soul” (I Samuel 18:3). Their covenant symbolized absolute loyalty, profound friendship, and extraordinary personal sacrifice. After Jonathan fell in battle, David mourned him with the famous lament: “I am distressed for thee, my brother Jonathan; very pleasant hast thou been unto me.” The obverse features the denomination, the State emblem, the name of Israel in Hebrew, English, and Arabic, the year of issue, and a symbol of arrows alluding to the biblical signal Jonathan used to warn David. Around the rim appears the inscription “Covenant of David and Jonathan” in Hebrew, English, and Arabic. The reverse depicts David and Jonathan shaking hands as a symbol of their covenant of friendship. Jonathan holds arrows in his hand, referencing the warning signal that helped David escape Saul’s wrath. The design emphasizes trust, honor, and the deep bond shared between the two men.
