Mintage: 445 “Jacob’s Dream” coin, dated 2014, the nineteenth issue in the “Biblical Art” series and legal tender issued by the Bank of Israel. The coin depicts one of the most profound and well-known visions in the Bible - Jacob’s dream of the ladder reaching heaven on his journey to Haran. The Bible recounts: “And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it...” (Genesis 28:12). Jacob fled from Be’er Sheva in fear of his brother Esau after receiving Isaac’s blessing. During his journey he stopped to rest, and there he experienced the vision of the ladder connecting earth and heaven. In the dream, God promises Jacob that He will protect him wherever he goes and will return him and his descendants to the Land of Israel. According to tradition, the dream took place on Mount Moriah, the future site of the Holy Temple. Jacob named the place “Beth El, ” recognizing it as a sacred place of divine presence. Many commentators interpreted Jacob’s dream as a symbol of the connection between the earthly and the spiritual worlds. Nachmanides viewed the ladder and angels as representing the history of the Jewish people through exile and redemption, and God’s eternal promise never to abandon His people. The obverse features the State emblem, the denomination, the name of Israel in Hebrew, English, and Arabic, the year of issue, and the mint mark. Around the rim appears the inscription “Jacob’s Dream” in Hebrew, Arabic, and English, alongside a ladder rising upward. The reverse depicts Jacob sleeping upon the ground while above him rises the ladder with angels ascending and descending between earth and heaven. The elegant symbolic design emphasizes the connection between the physical and spiritual worlds and the timeless significance of the biblical vision.
