Mintage: 2,000 “Elijah Went Up by a Whirlwind into Heaven” coin, dated 2011, a commemorative issue by the Bank of Israel and the sixteenth coin in the “Biblical Art” series. The coin commemorates one of the most dramatic and inspiring biblical scenes - the ascent of the prophet Elijah into heaven before the eyes of his disciple Elisha. Elijah is regarded as one of the most revered prophets in Jewish tradition. The biblical account in the Book of Kings describes the final journey of Elijah and Elisha, culminating in the appearance of “a chariot of fire and horses of fire” carrying Elijah heavenward in a whirlwind. This extraordinary moment became a lasting symbol of prophecy, spirituality, and redemption in Jewish heritage. The obverse features the denomination in Hebrew and English, the State emblem, the name of Israel in Hebrew and Arabic, and the year of issue. Around the rim appears the inscription “Elijah Went Up by a Whirlwind into Heaven” in Hebrew, English, and Arabic. The reverse depicts Elijah ascending to heaven in a fiery chariot drawn by horses of fire, while Elisha gazes upward with raised hands. The flowing artistic lines emphasize the force of the whirlwind and the dramatic spiritual ascent.
