Israel - 1 and 2 Sheqalim 2013 - David Playing for Saul - Silver 925 and 999, 45.5g (approx. 44.42g pure silver, 1.43 oz) - Proof and Mint A pair of official Bank of Israel silver coins issued in 2013 as part of the Biblical Art Series. The coins commemorate the biblical account of the young David playing his harp before King Saul to soothe his troubled spirit. Obverse: The denomination, either 1 New Sheqel or 2 New Sheqalim, appears in Hebrew and English, together with the State Emblem and the name Israel in Hebrew, English and Arabic. The surrounding inscription reads DAVID PLAYING FOR SAUL 1 SAMUEL 16, with its Hebrew and Arabic equivalents. The year 2013 and an image of a harp appear below. Reverse: The young David is seated in the foreground playing the harp, while King Saul appears behind him, seated upon his throne, wearing a crown and listening to the music. Saul holds a spear, in accordance with the biblical narrative. The design contrasts David's calm figure with Saul's troubled state. The obverse was designed by Gideon Keich and the reverse by Moshe Pereg.
